Potential Treatment Options for COVID-19 That Are Being Studied.

3

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new coronavirus discovered after an outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

Soon after the initial outbreak, this coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, has spread to most countries, including UAE. Coronavirus has been responsible for millions of infections globally, causing thousands of deaths.

With no treatment or vaccines available for COVID-19, several medicines are being exhaustively investigated and researched around the world. However, this may take several months or longer because researchers have to test these treatments in a small group of humans before making it available for everyone. These kind of tests in humans are called clinical trial.

Here are some treatment options that are currently being investigated for protection against SARS-CoV-2 and treatment of COVID-19 symptoms.

Remdesivir

Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that was developed for Ebola virus.

A research done on isolated cell found that this medicine is effective at fighting coronavirus, and further investigation in humans will be necessary to see its effects in humans.

Right now two clinical studies are conducted in china and one in USA to assess the effectiveness of Remdesivir in Coronavirus in humans. But as of now, this treatment is not approved for coronavirus.

Chloroquine

Chloroquine is an antimalarial medicine that is used to fight malaria and rheumatoid arthritis. It is a very old medicine and has been used for several years in humans now.

Scientist have found this medicine to be effective when research was done in test tube containing coronavirus.

The US FDA has approved the use of chloroquine in limited emergency use.

Currently, more than 5 clinical studies are being conducted on chloroquine as a potential coronavirus treatment.

Lopinavir and ritonavir

Lopinavir and ritonavir is a medicine that is used in fighting HIV.

An old man in south Korea was given this medicine and he had a significant improvement in his condition. There was a reduction in the number of coronavirus in his body.

According to WHO, there might be some benefit of using lopinavir and ritonavir in combination with other medicine.

APN01

APN01 was discovered in 2000 to fight against SARS. It was recently discovered that SARS and Coronavirus uses the same protein to infect in humans.

A clinical study is going on in 24 humans. If the study shows some positive results, larger studies will be conducted.

Favilavir

Favilavir was initially developed to treat symptoms of nose and throat inflammation. This medicine has been approved in china to treat the symptoms of Covid-19.

This medicine has shown effectiveness in a clinical trial of 70 people. However, the studies are not published yet.

Gimsilumab

This is a medicine that is expected to fight against the lung damage caused by coronavirus. Thereby, it will reduce the mortality in corona virus patients. This medicine is investigated by Roivant Sciences.

Keynote

At this point in time, there’s no vaccine or drug to protect you or treat you from the novel coronavirus.

Scientist around the world are working hard to develop potential vaccines and treatments.

Evidence suggest that some medications may have the potential to treat the symptoms of COVID-19.

More large-scale testing is needed to determine if these treatments are effective and safe. Clinical trials for these drugs could take several months to years.
