Ginkgo Biloba L.: Mental Health Benefits from the World’s Oldest Living Tree

Gingko – A Traditional Medicine The seeds and leaves of Ginkgo biloba are used in traditional medicines. The two main bioactive constituents present in a concentrated standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba are Flavonoid Glycosides (24%) and terpene lactones (6%), which may act in a complementary manner. These molecules act as antioxidants/free radical scavengers, enzyme inhibitors, and cation chelators (1). The therapeutic mechanisms of action of the Ginkgo leaf extract are suggested to be through its antioxidant, antiplatelet, anti-hypoxic, anti-edemic, Hemorheology, and microcirculatory actions. Studies conducted shows that there is a significant improvement in speed of information processing in the brain related to working memory. The bioactive constituents from the Ginkgo biloba have the potential to act as a ‘smart drug’ or nootropic agent to improve intelligence (3). Mechanism of Action The Ginkgo leaf extract has been reported to have the therapeutical role in neurodegenerative disease prevention and enhancing mental health (stress release and memory enhancing action) (2): Inhibit the formation of Aβ from β-amyloid precursor protein (APP), a crucial process in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease Inhibits ROS accumulation induced by Aβ (particularly flavonol quercetin) and also reduces neuron apoptosis, where apoptosis is considered to be one of the main causes for neurodegenerative diseases and thus help to relieve Alzheimer’s disease Improve cerebral blood flow by stimulating Norepinephrine secretion Anxiety syndromes such as stress, moods, and depression are becoming common in the modern world. Since mood and emotion are related to stress, the alleviating effects of Ginkgo leaf extract may result in improving mood, thus resulting in antidepressant activity Stress involves a rise in the levels of glucocorticoids, and a subsequent memory dysfunction, increased anxiety, decreased immunity, gastrointestinal tract disturbances, myocardial infarction, or effects such as increased vigilance Decrease the corticosteroid synthesis and subsequently the circulating levels of glucocorticoids The memory enhancing effects of Ginkgo leaf extract is through prevention of neuron degeneration Side effects A transient headache has been documented as a side effect. The use of GBE has not been associated with other severe side effects to date. The whole plant, seeds, and pulp are occasionally associated with severe allergic reactions. Patients taking aspirin should exercise caution when adding GBE therapy (1). References 1. Kleijnen J, Knipschild P. Ginkgo biloba. Lancet 1992; 340: 1136 2. Mahadevan, S., and Y. Ostenil Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Bones meet to form a joint and wherever a very thin layer of slippery but viscous fluid (synovial fluid) separates and lubricates the cartilages which cover the bones, such joints are known as synovial joints. There are many synovial joints in the human body including the hand, wrist, neck, back, knee and hip. Synovial joints are the reason behind locomotion and movement of human beings. Aging joints, injury and obesity leads to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis symptoms include pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and it is also known as ‘wear and tear arthritis’. Several factors give rise to the development of this condition including excessive weight, injury, genes, and friction. Osteoarthritis is a long term disease but there is no cure. Treatments are there mostly to regulate symptoms. Strengthening exercises helps in building muscles around the affected joints and therefore there is less pressure on those synovial joints which results in reducing the pain. It is very important to maintain an active life, however physical activity is an impediment when the joints are aching. Excessive weight puts an additional force to the synovial joints. It is of utmost importance that you keep a check on your weight by managing your diet and following exercises when you are suffering from osteoarthritis. Joints surgery can replace severely damaged joints, especially the knees. The surgeries are mostly costly. There are medications available for managing the pain and inflammation. You can try this product called Ostenil. Ostenil is injected into the affected joints once a week for a total of three to five injections. Several joints may be treated at the same time. The effects of this treatment will last up to at least 6 months. Repeat treatment cycles may be administered with the advice of a doctor. It is very important that proper rest should be taken by the patient along with the dose. Ostenil improves the lubricating and shock absorbing functions of synovial fluid and reduces mechanical overload of the joints.

Skin Irritation Problem – Derma-Heal as Solution

Our skin demands care. It forms a protective layer to what’s within, say, the tissues, the muscles, veins and arteries. It is sensitive to temperature and due to its response to stimuli, we are able to save ourselves from extreme heat and cold. While there is should be an entire routine of taking proper care of our skin, cleaning and moisturizing it, we are hardly able to find time to do that. There is a pigment called melanin in our skin, which keeps our skin from burning. UAE has a temperature where if you are not covered fully then you run the risk of suffering sun burns. But this melanin pigment reacts with the harsh rays of the sun to form a protective layer, which we recognize as ‘tan’. Tan is actually good for us, although it makes us our skin dull. The reason why expatriates from the west often get more sunburns than the indigenous people is because this pigment is absent in their bodies. The absence of this pigment makes them more susceptible to skin care. Our skin’s reflex mechanism is amazing. Whenever there is a mosquito bite or for that matter any insect bite, the skin immediately reacts. There is inflammation and redness. This is a warning sign. This is the skin’s way of saying that some harm has been done to your body. But this inflammation is often itchy and irritable. And if we are to give in to that temptation, we invariably start scratching to no end. Thus we make the wound worse. Our skin not only responds to vectors but in many cases it is allergic to dust as well. You can have a rash just because you were exposed to dust. The reason as to why we have rashes or prickly heat is slightly different. Prickly heat (miliaria) is due to blockage of sweat ducts. You have thousands of sweat glands that lie just under the skin surface. These glands make sweat which travels down the sweat duct to the skin surface. If the sweat duct is blocked, the sweat seeps into the nearby skin. This causes tiny pockets of swelling (inflammation) which cause the rash. It seems that a germ (bacterium) called Staphylococcus epidermidis may play a role. Skin Irritation Solution: However, the point is that our skin reacts in various ways and it takes the form of an inflammation or rash. If we scratch on the rash too much then we might cause the skin to break out and even bleed. Therefore it is necessary to apply an emollient to soothe the skin. One such ointment is Derma – Heal. It has the property to relieve irritated skin and regenerate damaged skin.
